Admirably staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have zero high issue within the traditions off its very unappealing label.” [ 8 ]

The latest film’s copywriter and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess video game, to possess mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) has worked within casino and you may old a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding like and you will hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly cocky photo (in addition to their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of genre.” [ ten ]

Its primarily a question of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces stylishly when you find yourself a giant throw of actors and stars promote your standard assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the good nothing woman which brings out the newest best in him and you can Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen which will get your towards jams. Thomas Gomez try fatty once the villain and Lee J. Cobb does a special ready trip because a weary police inspector which ultimately shuts the actual situation.
